Blockbuster are veterans of the home rental service, having helped kick start the video rental business back in 1985. As such, they know a thing or two about rental service, and can happily claim among the fastest turnaround times in the UK and independent surveys have consistently ranked Blockbuster in the top 5 for speed of service and customer satisfaction and have shown that Blockbuster send out more titles per customer per month than anyone else.
Blockbuster also boast an impressive film library, containing over 50,000+ film rental titles, which includes the highest number of new releases of any rival DVD rental service. Searching for a title on the Blockbuster site is a relatively straightforward affair and you can search by title, actor, director, theme or genre, or opt for a more refined approach with the advanced search option.
The search by actor and director options are in particular really useful; they allow you to pretty much get a complete overview of an actor's filmography or director's body of work with the single click of a button. Search results also often yield a selection of related titles that you may not have previously considered, and the Blockbuster site also builds up a history of titles you've rented, and will randomly suggest other films you might be interested in renting. Within searches, we found a wide range of world cinema and Bollywood titles rubbing shoulders with more mainstream fare and big name titles along with entire season box sets of popular TV series', such as Heroes, Lost and CSI.
Whilst we're on the subject of box sets, it's probably worth mentioning that Blockbuster are one of the few retailers that send out 'bonus discs' of extras that often come with standard DVD releases - some retailers will just send out the first 'film' disc and not the disc full of extras unless the title is marked as 'Special Edition' or is explicitly marked as a box set.
Blockbuster offer three Unlimited packages starting from £9.78 a month, allowing customers to keep up to 4 titles at home at any one time. For customers who see themselves renting on a less frequent basis, Blockbuster also roll with a 1 at a time Pay Monthly option, for just £4.88 a month.
Blockbuster run with a 14 day free introductory trial for their Unlimited 2 and 3 packages but not, unfortunately, for the others. However, customers wanting to test the waters can also easily switch between packages at any time at no additional cost, so you could in theory sign up for the free trial period on one of these two packages, before switching to another if you decide to continue using the service.
Other additional features of the Blockbuster service include the ability to purchase ex-rental titles direct from their site at seriously low prices, a store locator, allowing you to find your nearest Blockbuster outlet, and a really thoughtful email notification service, which immediately sends a message to your inbox as soon as your order is dispatched.
In summary, a fast, efficient rental service with good rates, a wide selection of titles and a number of useful optional extras.
