Carrie

Carrie-2013Carrie is a modern adaptation of the 1976 horror story about a young girl who is an outcast at school and overly protected by her religious mother.

Carrie is a film not for the faint hearted, presenting violent themes and bloody gore throughout. Outcast Carrie White discovers she has telekinetic powers, which helps her break free from her over bearing mother and the bullies at school. However, things turn ugly when she is pushed just too far.

Chloe Grace Mortez (500 Days of Summer, Kick-Ass and Let Me In) stars in this gruesome revival, playing the creepy Carrie who struggles to fit in with the cool kids at school. Although she’ll have you feeling sympathetic, you’ll find the sinister side of her to be quite disturbing.

Julianne Moore (The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Crazy, Stupid, Love) must also be mentioned for her role as Carrie’s Mother, Margaret White. Driven crazy by her religious beliefs, Margaret White tries to control her daughter and makes Carrie believe the world is full of evil. Her role creates this secluded atmosphere within the family home, paving the way for tensions to explode later on in the film.

Some people are likely brush off this film, purely because it’s an adaptation of the 1976 horror film, but we wouldn’t hastily ignore this one. Since the 70s, film technology has progressed immensely and its filmmakers took inspiration and have emphasised some fragments from the original, that this version would most likely be banned if it was presented in the 70s (as far as we’re aware, the original was never banned and became a success).

Unlike many other horror films, which are purely filmed with the intention of scaring the audience, Carrie actually has a back story. It’s not overly complex so you won’t get too lost, but it effectively adds a nice touch to the blood, gore and general creepiness.

Adapted from the best-selling book by Stephen King, we have to admit that the film struggled to stay true to it. This may disappoint King fans, however trying to adapt a book to a film is always a tricky one, even the Twilight Saga had issues.

For horror film fanatics, Carrie gives you all the fundamentals that a classic horror should have. Supernatural powers, horrendous deaths and plot twists dominate this film, so you can expect your adrenaline to be pumping.

However, for those who wish to try and sit through a scary film without hiding under a cushion, we recommend you start with something less aggressive before watching this.
